TATTED SLIPPER
Note-- Let p stand for picot, ds for double knot or stitch, and r for ring.
A perfect fitting mule, which is dainty and serviceable, may be quickly made of allover tatting. The one illustrated is made of No. 10 ecru thread and is sewed with some of the same thread to an ecru silk cord around the edge of a satin sole.
The directions given for top illustrated will fit soles Nos. 2 to 5. For larger sizes add two extra motifs each time across the work.
Wind the shuttle from the ball and without cutting thread make a ring of (4 ds, p) 3 times, 4 ds, close; a chain of 4 ds, p, (2 ds, p) 3 times, 4 ds, and a draw up to make a firm curve. Another ring of 4 ds, join to last picot of preceding ring, 4 ds, join to middle p of same ring, 4 ds, p, 4ds, close, completing the first motif.
Turn work over, make a ring as at first; turn, make a chain, then another ring joined by first and middle picots to last ring made, which will complete the second motif.
Again turn work, and repeat 11 times, in all; cut threads and tie. This gives the straight width of the top, over the instep--without the little point, however, on top of the instep, which is added later.
Fill shuttle from ball and without cutting thread fasten at base of first ring of last motif made. Make a chain of 4 ds, p, (2 ds, p) 3 times, 4 ds, and draw into firm curve. Turn work, make a ring of 4 ds, join to first picot in ring of next to the last motif of band across instep; 4 ds, join to middle picot of same ring, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, close; make a chain of 4 ds, p, (2 ds, p) three times, 4 ds, and draw up firmly; another ring of 4 ds, join to last p of preceding ring, 4 ds, join to middle picot, 4 ds, join to remaining picot of ring below, 4 ds, close, making a little square of four rings.
Turn work and make a ring; a chain of 4 ds, p, 2 ds, join to second picot of chain in motif below, 2 ds, join to third picot of chain, 2 ds, p, 4 ds, thus joining the two chains together at the two middle picots; make a ring, joining by two picots to last ring made; close.
Repeat across until you have five little squares of four rings each, and four sets of chains joined together, ending with a chain like the others joined at base of second ring in very first motif made.
To continue, fasten thread at base of first ring in last motif made; make a chain; then a ring, a chain and a ring, joining these rings to the two rings in motif below to form a square; repeat across, making four squares of rings in all, ending with chain joined to base of lower ring in last square of rings.
Fasten thread at beginning of last chain; make a chain; a ring, a chain joined to chain below, and a ring joined to preceding ring. Repeat seven times, which will complete three squares of rings, ending with a chain fastened to base of ring in motif below. Cut threads.
Now, without fastening thread to work, make a ring, a chain and a ring, joining rings to last two rings made; repeat across, making 7 motifs and completing 4 squares of rings; cut thread.
Join thread at beginning of last chain made, make a chain; then a ring, a chain and a ring, and repeat four times, completing 3 squares of rings, a chain, joined to base of lower ring in last square; cut threads.
Fasten thread at beginning of last chain made; make a chain; a ring, a chain and a ring three times, completing 2 squares of rings; a chain, joined to outer ring of square below; cut threads.
Fasten thread at beginning of last chain made; make a chain; a ring, a chain and a ring, forming last square of rings on toe of slipper; a chain, joined to outer ring of square below.
To make point at top of slipper, over instep, reverse work, fasten thread at base of last ring in third motif; make a chain; then a ring, chain and ring, joining rings to motif below to form a square of rings; repeat twice, making two squares of rings, and end with chain joined to base of outside ring in square of rings below. Cut threads.
Fasten threads at beginning of last chain; make a chain; a ring, chain and ring, joining rings to rings in row below, and end with chain joined to outside ring of square below. Mrs. C.B. Whitehouse.
